Accelerator stuck? What do you do if your Atlanta vehicle won’t stop?

Unintended acceleration of Toyota vehicles has killed at least 89 people and caused injury to many more.   Now, Chrysler has announced a recall of its 2007 Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass vehicles for sticky accelerator problems.  In addition, the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration is investigating consumer complaints involving stuck accelerator pedals.  If your car suddenly accelerates, do you know what to do?

Regardless of the cause, if your vehicle experiences unintended acceleration, you should take the following steps:

Brake firmly and steadily.  Do not pump the brake.
Shift the transmission into neutral.
Steer to a safe location.
Shut the engine off.
Call your Atlanta car dealer to pick the vehicle up.  Do not attempt to drive it.
