Red Light Cameras Save Lives

A report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that 25,580 people died and many more were injured in 2012 auto accidents from January through September. Being prepared before an accident can enable a victim to obtain all the necessary information that will be helpful to their case.

Consulting a Clayton County attorney after an auto accident enhances a victim's ability to receive a reasonable settlement. If you have been injured in an automobile accident you should discuss your case with an accident attorney at the Law Offices of Shane Smith.

Multi-lane, high-traffic intersections have an inordinate number of auto accidents. The Greater Atlanta area has over 75 intersections with red light cameras that are designed to prevent drivers from racing through an intersection on a yellow or red light.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety report about red light cameras, 159 lives were saved by red light cameras. The study included 14 major cities with red light cameras and compared fatal accident statistics. The study included a broad look at 99 cities with populations over 200,000 and then compared fatal crashes between 2004-2008 and 1992-1996, the latter period being prior to the use of red light camera programs.

The study concluded, "Red light camera enforcement programs reduce the citywide rate of fatal red light running crashes and, to a lesser but still significant extent, the rate of all fatal crashes at signalized intersections. Cities wishing to reduce fatal crashes at signalized intersections should consider red light camera enforcement."

Red light cameras can also be used as evidence for intersection accidents. They are designed to take photos of cars that have not crossed into an intersection before a light turns red. Camera photos can be used to prove fault in an intersection accident. Auto accident victims should contact an experienced Clayton County accident attorney to obtain all evidence including red light camera photographs.

If you or someone you know has been hurt in an auto accident, meet with a Clayton County auto accident lawyer. Call the Law Offices of Shane Smith to schedule a free legal consultation.
