Spinal Cord Injury & Car Crashes Caused by Drunk Drivers: Classes

Car crashes caused by drunk drivers can lead to serious injuries for not only the reckless driver, but for the accident victims in the other car that he or she hits. A spinal cord injury, statistics indicate, can cause irreversible damage, the treatment of which can cost thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

When you’ve suffered a serious spinal cord injury, a lawyer can help you prepare for the future. Seek assistance from an Atlanta car accident attorney

Categorization of Spinal Cord Injuries According to Severity and Location

When classified by severity, there are 2 main types of spinal cord injuries: an incomplete injury, in which the victim still retains partial movement and sensation, and a complete spinal injury, in which the victim is completely paralyzed below the site of the injury. In most cases, a complete spinal cord injury is permanent.

When classified by location, there are 4 different areas in which a spinal cord injury can take place:
  • the neck (cervical injury);
  • behind the chest (thoracic);
  • the lower back (lumbar); and
  • the tailbone (sacral).
The most serious injuries are often those that are cervical, and cause quadriplegia, or total loss of arms and legs. The lower on the body that a spine injury takes place, the less of the body is affected overall.
