Q
How can pedestrians prevent being injured by motor vehicles?

A

Although pedestrians can do a lot to improve their safety and reduce their risks of being involved and injured in a Georgia pedestrian accident, it is a two way street. Drivers also have a role in preventing pedestrian injuries and deaths from occurring. For this reason, we are providing eight steps that pedestrians as well as drivers should follow when sharing the road.

Steps for Pedestrians:

  1. Always look both ways before stepping out into the street
  2. Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible, or facing traffic if sidewalk isn’t available
  3. Only cross at designated crosswalks instead of jaywalking
  4. Cross with the pedestrian traffic signals and not against them
  5. Increase visibility by wearing reflective clothing
  6. Never walk impaired
  7. Do not walk distracted, as texting while walking can cause accidents
  8. Don’t listen to music

Steps for Drivers:

  1. Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists
  2. Yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk
  3. Never drive drunk
  4. Don’t text and drive or participate in other distracted driving activities
  5. Be cautious around child pedestrians
  6. Slow down in school zones
  7. Always stop behind a bus when lights are flashing
  8. Pay attention to traffic lights and stop signs

As Fulton County accident attorneys, we encourage drivers and pedestrians to limit their distractions, put down their cellphones, obey the road rules, share the road, and stay alert.

Unfortunately, a car will win when matched against a pedestrian. This is why pedestrians should never jaywalk, cross mid block, or cross against the traffic lights. However, not all pedestrian accidents in Fulton County are the result of pedestrian negligence. Many injuries and fatalities involving pedestrians are the result of driver negligence.
