What are the areas of the brain?

A: There are several different areas of the brain. The fore brain consists of the telencephalon, the diencephalon.  The next part of the brain is the mid brain.  The mid brain consists of the mesencephalon.  The next area is the hindbrain.  The hindbrain consists of the metencephalon and the myelencephal The fore brain consists of the telencephalon. The telencephalon is the largest area of the brain and it's responsible for many different functions.  This area is commonly referred to as the cerebrum, which makes up most of the brain.  Hence it can be divided into two hemispheres or halves.  This area covers the cerebral cortex and has as a top part of the brain we commonly think of when they think of a brain.  There are different lobes in this area that perform specific functions.  The four lobes are the frontal lobe, the occipital lobes, the timber lobes and the parietal lobes.  This area also includes the limbic system that helps us deal with emotions.  The cerebrum handles emotions and the hippocampus holds long-term memories.  The basal ganglia is located near the cerebrum.  This helps with motion and balance. The diencephalon is located near the middle of the brain. It contains the thalamus and hypothalamus.  Thalamus is the information processing part of the brain.  It helps us with our senses, attention, and alertness.  The hypothalamus controls the autonomic nervous and endocrine systems. It helps with more basic functions such as eating and fighting.  It can also send messages back and forth to pituitary gland. The hind brain contains the metencephalon.  This is in the low part of the hind brain or back part of the brain.  It has the pons and cerebellum.  The pons works as a switchboard sending signals from other parts of the brain.  The cerebellum handles reflexes and balance. The myelencephalon is in the posterior area of the hind brain and contains the medulla oblongata.  The medulla oblongata contains our involuntary bodily functions such as breathing and heart rate, blood pressure, things like that.
