The effect is that more pickup truck drivers will die each year as a result of a crash. Approximately 30% those fatalities involve drivers who failed to wear a safety belt.

Why are Atlanta truck drivers exempt from the seat belt law?

The Georgia legislature chose to exempt pickup truck drivers from seat belt requirements because they thought it would inconvenience farmers. Sadly, this puts drivers at greater risk of injury and death.

Why is this so dangerous?

The Highway Loss Data Institute examined over 25 "hybrid-conventional pairs" from model years 2003 to 2011. Each vehicle had at least one collision claim and one related injury claim filed between 2002 and 2010. Why? It’s not the fuel. Hybrids are an average of 10 percent heavier than similarly sized conventional vehicle. The extra weight offers more protection in the event of an Atlanta car crash.

Booster seats are designed for children age four to eight who are too big for a regular car seat, but aren't large enough to use an adult seatbelt. A child using only a seatbelt is twice as likely to be injured in an Atlanta car crash as a child in a properly-fitted booster seat.

Minority Children Are More Likely to Die in an Atlanta Car Accident

Car seats and seat belts are the best way to protect a child from injury in an Atlanta car crash. In fact, more than half of all children who are injured in car crashes are not restrained.

Researchers from UCLA looked at statistics relating to child car crash injury in National Trauma Database records from 2002 to 2006. The team, led by Rebecca Stark, MD, presented its results at the American Academy of Pediatrics' national conference.

The study, "Are There Racial/Ethnic Disparities in the Use of Restraints and Outcomes in Children Following Motor Vehicle Crashes?" involved records for 37,375 children under the age of 16. Researchers looked at injuries and seatbelt use by ethnic group. They found that black, Hispanic and Native American children have lower rates of seat belt and car seat use than white and Asian children. These children were also at greater risk for car accident-related injuries.

There was an overall injury rate of seven percent. Children who were restrained were less likely to sustain injury, and had injuries that were less severe than those sustained by children who were not wearing a seatbelt. Children who were not wearing a seatbelt or in a car seat were more likely to require emergency surgery, suffer permanent disability, or die from their injuries.

A recent study by Safe Kids USA found that many parents are making simple but dangerous car seat installation mistakes that could risk their child's life in the event of a Georgia car accident.

The nonprofit group reviewed the records of 79,000 car seat inspections that took place in 2009-10. Among the findings:

Parents don't use the tether strap or use it incorrectly.
