Safe to School in Atlanta - 8 Tips to Keep Child Pedestrians Safe.

Every day an average of 529 children are killed in motor vehicle accidents.  About one-fifth (20%) of these accidents involve children who are pedestrians.  Most child pedestrian accidents occur when children are on their way to or from school.

School has started in Atlanta and that means it’s a great time to review safety rules with your children.

Child pedestrian safety rules:

1. Don’t overestimate your child’s pedestrian skills. Children under ten years of age do not have the visual acuity and depth perception to judge speed, spatial relations, and distance on their own. They are not able to make decisions in risky situations. Therefore, parents should walk with children until they are at least ten years old.

2. Walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the far left side of the street facing traffic.  Walk single file.

3. Cross the street at marked crosswalks. If there is no crosswalk, cross only at the corner. Obey all traffic signals.

4. Never cross between cars.

5. Look right, left, and then right again before crossing. Keep looking for traffic while you are crossing. Young children should hold the hand of an adult.

6. Stay visible. When it is dark, wear light-colored, reflective clothing and carry a flashlight. When it is rainy, wear bright colors.

7. If a toy or pet goes into the street, your child should tell an adult. Do not go into the street to get it.

8. Set an example for your children by following and demonstrating safety rules.

According to experts, parents have a tendency to overestimate their child’s skills. Even thoughtful children often act without thinking and don’t do what drivers expect them to do. It is always better to be conservative. This could save your child’s life and prevent serious injury.
