FMCSA Makes Truck Records more Available

Many truck accidents are caused by driver error, however trucking companies are often a source of responsibility for truck accidents, as well.  The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulates the trucking industry and enforces all rules and laws related to commercial trucking.  The FMCSA does regular audits of truck companies to make sure they are compliant with all regulations and keep records of any violations.  Overall, the FMCSA scores companies in major safety categories called the Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASIC).  BASIC scores can let trucking companies know how they are doing as far as safety goes and serves to share safety information with truck accident attorneys, the public, truck drivers, and other truck companies for comparison.  This safety information is particularly important if you are injured in a truck accident, because a track record of safety violations may indicate a safety violation in your accident.  Always contact an experienced Clayton County trucking attorney to help you determine whether the truck company was partially responsible for your accident.

The FMCSA is unveiling changes to its website that will make truck company information more accessible online.  The new information on the website will include:

  • Each truck companies BASIC scores
  • Identifies trends for each companies in each BASIC
  • Information on truck companies’ performances in compliance reviews
  • Shows number of FMCSA inspections for each company and the number of inspection violations
  • Gives each truck company’s insurance information and authority status
  • Portrays estimated safety performances over times through graphs

The new available information allows truck companies to keep track of their own safety performance, allows the public to access safety records, and enables manufacturers and companies to choose truck companies with strong safety records to transport their cargo.

Even though safety information is available on the internet, many truck companies continue to violate FMCSA safety regulations and cause accidents and injuries.  If you have been injured, call the Law Offices of Shane Smith at (770) 487-8999 to schedule a consultation with an experienced truck accident lawyer as soon as possible.
