  • Number of persons injured in traffic accidents: 133,555
  • Number of traffic deaths: 1,703
  • Average crashes per day: 1,198


Types of vehicles involved in Georgia traffic accidents:

  • Passenger cars: 369,661
  • Pickup trucks: 100,637
  • SUV’s: 96,051
  • Vans: 39,732
  • Tractor trailers: 13,275
  • Single unit large trucks: 7,866
  • Motorcycles and motorized bikes: 4,180
  • Bus: 3,285
  • Vehicle with trailer: 2,923
  • Panel truck: 2,153
  • Truck tractor: 1,004

Fatal crashes:

  • Number of fatal collisions: 31,562
  • Number of highway fatalities: 1,703
  • An average of five people a day or 31 people a week die in Georgia accidents.
  • In Georgia, there were 1.53 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles travelled. The U.S rate was 1.42 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles.
  • One out of six traffic fatalities involved a large truck.
  • Rural counties have a higher fatal crash rate.

Leading contributing factors to Georgia traffic accidents:

Speed:

  • Unsafe or illegal speeds were factors in at least one-sixth of Georgia car crashes.
  • Rates of serious injury and death are three times higher in high speed crashes than other car crashes.

Pedestrians:

  • About three pedestrians a week are killed in Georgia.
  • Pedestrians are 32 times more likely to be killed in motor vehicle crashes than vehicle occupants are.
  • One out of 16 pedestrians involved in car crashes are killed.


Children:

  • Car accidents are the leading cause of death and injury to children.
  • Child safety seats reduce the risk of injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers.
