Texting is a Dangerous Driving Distraction

Any activity that forces you to remove your hands from the steering wheel, take your eyes off the road in front of you, or take your concentration off driving is considered to be a dangerous distraction while driving. One of the most dangerous distractions causes physical, cognitive, and visual distractions all at the same time, and that is reading or sending text messages, emails, or other types of instant messages. Experts estimate that a single text may force you to drive 100 yards—the length of a football field—with your eyes off of the road. As you can imagine, driving that far without looking up can cause devastating collisions, injuries, or death.

Drivers who are texting often do not notice when the cars in front of them have stopped, so they collide into the back of those cars, often causing a chain reaction accident especially at high traffic volumes. Texting drivers also often stray outside of their lane, causing them to either side swipe cars going in the same direction or to crash head-on with traffic that is oncoming in the other direction. As you can imagine, all of these types of accidents have the potential to cause severe injuries that require extensive medical treatment.

As of 2010, texting is illegal for all drivers in the state of Georgia. If someone breaks that law and causes you injury, an experienced distracted driving lawyer can help you hold that person liable for all of your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more. All negligent texting drivers should be held accountable for their actions and we can help accident victims recover.
