What Markings are Required to be on Semi-Trucks?

There are thousands of semi-trucks on Georgia roadways at any given moment, operated by both in-state and out-of-state companies and truck drivers. These vehicles are generally several times the size and weight of smaller vehicles, and have the potential to cause significant damage and injury in the event of an accident. Because of the inherent risk these vehicles pose, it is essential that both the general public and authorities are quickly and easily able to identify the party responsible for the operation of a particular truck. This ensures that drivers and companies are accountable for the unsafe operation of a vehicle and any accidents or injuries that may result. People injured in semi-truck accidents should discuss their case with an experienced truck accident attorney as soon as possible.

To ensure accountability and ease of identification, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulates the identifying markings that must be present on motor vehicles. The requirements include the following:

  • DOT number
  • The legal name or trade name of the business entity that owns or controls the motor carrier operation

There may additional signage or markings required, such as a HAZMAT placard or oversize load warning.  Additional markings may be present of a truck, but the basic federal regulations require only that the party responsible for the truck’s operation is identifiable. After a truck accident, victims should be sure to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Not only will seeing a physician ensure that your injuries are properly diagnosed and treated, but it will also generate an official record should your injuries be contested.
