Drowsy Driving May Be To Blame For Fatal Coweta County Crash

Drowsy driving may have caused the fatal I-85 accident that claimed the life of a man from Newnan.

The Coweta County accident occurred at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 21. Fifty-one-year-old Donald Clyatt Moore was driving his van south on I-85 when his van had a flat tire.  Moore pulled onto the middle median and was standing between the van and a concrete barrier when a Nissan Rogue smashed into the van.  The Nissan had been hit by a pick-up truck.  When it hit the van, the van hit Mr. Moore.

Moore was flown by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center.  He died in the hospital on Friday afternoon.  A Georgia State Police Officer was helping Moore change his tire.  He suffered abrasions and other injuries and was rushed to Atlanta Medical Center. The Nissan's driver suffered only minor injuries.

The driver of the pick-up truck, twenty-eight-year-old Paul Beaube Burgess of Marion Junction, Alabama, was arrested and held in jail without bond in Coweta County.  He was charged with driving under the influence of prescription drugs, serious injury by vehicle, and following too closely.  It is expected that he will face additional charges related to Moore's death.

Burgess was taking Adderall for a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Adderall may cause dizziness, but it does not usually affect driving ability.  Burgess's lawyer says Burgess may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.
