A six-month-old infant has died after a tractor-trailer driver failed to break at a construction zone on I-75.
The four vehicle Atlanta car crash occurred on Saturday, February 12, 2011 on Interstate 75 southbound near the Windy Hill Road exit. Traffic was stopped due to construction, but the driver of a tractor-trailer did not break. He crashed into two passenger vehicles and came to a stop with his wheels lodged in the back seat of a car.
Emergency crews had to extricate victims from the wreckage. Four adults and the infant were taken to area hospitals. Others sustained minor injuries.
The infant was a passenger in a 2009 GMC Acadia. The parents, Donald and Candice Morgan of Douglasville were also injured. The baby died on Monday, February 14.
The driver of a 2002 Buick LaSabre and his passenger were also taken to the hospital.
A Toyota Highlander was also hit, but the occupants did not sustain serious injuries.
The truck driver, 59-year-old Henry Lipps of New Albany, Indiana, was not injured . He turned himself in to Cobb County police on Monday evening. He has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and following too closely.
The accident is still under investigation.
