Eight people were ejected and two children were seriously injured in a Georgia SUV rollover accident that took place in Walton County.
The Monroe County highway accident occurred on Saturday, June 25. Ten family members were riding in a 2001 Dodge Durango that was headed south on Preston Road in Good Hope, Georgia. Twenty-six-year-old Jeremy Gillstrap Sr., the driver of the SUV, drifted to the side of the road, over corrected, and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle overturned several times.
Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. Charges are pending.
Only two people in the vehicle were wearing seat belts. Those two children were strapped in booster seats and were not injured. Everyone else was thrown from the Durango. The driver was also uninjured, but the other seven occupants, all between the ages of two and 19, sustained injuries and were taken to local hospitals.
A toddler, two-year-old, Lydia Gillstrap, was transported to Walton Medical Center. Three children, Matthew Gillstrap, 11, Jeremy Gillstrap Jr., 6, and Grady Gillstrap, 4, were flown by helicopter to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in Egleston. Three teenagers, Lindsay Garrett, 17, Jessie Morgan, 19, and Taylor Hendrix, 17, were taken by ambulance to Athens Regional Medical Center. Matthew and Lindsay are in serious condition.
The family is from the Monroe area.
