We've all seen bits of tire treads on the highway and thought nothing of it. But tire tread and other road debris can be dangerous obstacles - especially for motorcyclists. This week, a motorcyclist lost his life after a piece of tire tread caused a fatal crash in Gwinett County.
The Atlanta highway accident occurred on Wednesday, September 14 at about 5:30 p.m. Thirty-five-year-old Lonnie Cross was riding his motorcycle in the left lane of northbound I-85 at I-985 when a car hit a piece of tire tread and sent it into his lane. The airborne tire tread caused Mr. Cross to lose control of his motorcycle. The motorcycle fell in the road and Mr. Cross ended up in the center lane of I-85, directly in the path of an oncoming 18-wheeler truck. The semi-truck driver was not able to avoid Mr. Cross.
Cross was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center where he died from his injuries. According to police, no charges will be filed.
The Atlanta wrongful death lawyers at The Law Offices of Shane Smith offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Lonnie Cross.
