New Study Published in the Journal of Neuroscience
According to a new study regarding traumatic brain injuries, researchers are finding that one single TBI can increase a person’s risk of Alzheimer’s. Researchers from the prestigious Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) discovered in their studies that a single event of a moderate-to-severe TBI can result in an increase of the enzyme BACE1 in the brain.
When the proteins that regulate this enzyme are disrupted due to a single TBI event, a person can suffer from elevated levels of this enzyme. BACE1 is the enzyme that causes an increase in amyloid-beta levels, a brain peptide that is linked with Alzheimer’s disease.
Kendall Walker from the department of neuroscience at the University said, “A serious TBI can lead to a dysfunction in the regulation of the enzyme BACE1. Elevations of this enzyme cause elevated levels of Amyloid-beta, the key component of brain plaques associated with senility and Alzheimer’s disease.”
While this may be discouraging news, any study that continues to evaluate traumatic brain injuries may bring the medical world one step closer to finding a cure for TBI.
