Hit-and-run accidents can happen anytime and anywhere. You may be crossing the street, parked in a parking lot, or driving down I-75. What should you do if you become a victim of an Atlanta hit-and-run car crash?

Atlanta car wreck lawyer Shane Smith suggests the following:

  1. Never chase the hit-and-run driver. The driver may have left the scene because he is drunk, high, or wanted in connection with a crime. He could be dangerous.

  2. Call 911. Let the police know that an Atlanta traffic accident has occurred and that the other driver has left the scene. There are two reasons to do this. One, the police will be able to search the scene for clues that will help them identify and find the other driver. And two, they will also create an accident report. You will need a copy of the accident report in order to file for insurance compensation.

  3. Get treatment for your injuries. Your injuries should be your first priority. Even if you don't go to the emergency room, arrange to see a doctor as soon as is possible. What seems like a minor ache may be life-threatening, hidden injury.

  4. Take notes. Write down as much as you can remember about the accident. Your notes should include:

  • The location, date and time of the accident.

  • A brief sequence of events.

  • Names and contact information for any witnesses.

  • A description of the other vehicle: make, model, color - anything you can think of.

  1. Contact your insurance company. Let them know that a Georgia hit-and-run accident has occurred, as well as if there was property damage or an injury.

  2. Contact an Atlanta accident attorney. If your insurance company refuses your claim or offers too little compensation, an Atlanta hit-and-run crash attorney may be able to help. Read our article, "Cobb County Hit-and-Run Victims: Where Do You Go for Help?"  to learn more.
