In the last ten years, more than 43,000 Americans – including 3,906 children under the age of 16 have died in pedestrian-motor vehicle accidents. According to a recent study by Transportation for America, Atlanta ranks tenth on the list of most dangerous cities for pedestrians in the United States.
Causes of Atlanta car-pedestrian crashes include mistakes by both drivers and pedestrians.  In this article, we will focus on driver behaviors that can lead to traffic accidents.  You can read about pedestrian-caused accidents in our article: “How Do Pedestrians Cause Georgia Pedestrian-Motor Vehicle Accidents?"
Causes of Accidents Caused by Drivers
1.  Ignoring a crosswalk:  Not all cross walks are marked with lights or located at corners .A pedestrian always has the right of way in a crosswalk, whether or not it is marked.  Drivers should remain alert and be watchful at all crosswalks.  Learn more about crosswalk safety in our article, “Preventing Atlanta Crosswalk Accidents
2. Driver doesn’t see a pedestrian in the crosswalk:  Crosswalks may not be well lit.  Drivers should always expect pedestrians and use caution when approaching a crosswalk.
3. Ignoring or trying to beat traffic lights: Unfortunately too many drivers consider a yellow light as a sign to speed up through the crosswalk.  It is never a good idea to try to beat on orange light before it turns red or to run a red light. Driving through an intersection at a high rate of speed puts pedestrians and other drivers at risk.
4.  Driving under the influence: Driving while intoxicated is risky for everyone.  Drivers may not see pedestrians and may not slow down.
5. Passing a stopped school bus: When a chool buses is stopped, children are either getting on and off the bus.  They may cross in front of the bus. Passing a stopped school bus puts children at risk of injury and it is against the law.
