Children and families dressed in costume and collecting pillowcases of candy is a time-honored tradition in the Peachtree City area. Unfortunately, being a pedestrian in close proximity with cars, trucks, and other motor vehicles exposes people to an inherent risk of injury. This is particularly true at dusk or after sunset, when it is more difficult for drivers to spot pedestrians in their path. Drivers are always required to exercise due care when operating their vehicles, and Halloween is no exception. In fact, it is reasonable to expect drivers to exercise more caution than usual on Halloween night as they are or should be aware that there will be a greater number of pedestrians than usual on the streets.

How can Trick-or-Treaters Stay Safe?

Staying safe as a pedestrian on Halloween night is much like practicing pedestrian safety on other nights. The best thing to do in make sure you are visible and to use common sense when crossing or walking in the street. Of particular note is to make sure that your child does not reduce his or her visibility for the sake of having a particular costume. For example, if your costume consists of primarily dark material, it would be wise to use retro-reflective material, glow sticks, or a flashlight to increase his or her visibility. Other steps to take include:

  • Make sure young children are accompanied by an adult
  • If there is no sidewalk, make sure to walk facing traffic
  • Trick-or-treat on one side of the street, followed by the other, rather than crossing several times
  • Try and avoid neighborhoods with particularly high traffic volume

Unfortunately, accidents can happen even under the best of circumstances, and anyone who is injured should seek medical attention immediately.
