Drinking and Driving Golf Carts in Peachtree City Is a Problem

Driving any vehicle takes focus, attention, and skill in order to avoid a Peachtree City motor vehicle accident and keep others safe. When people mix alcohol with driving, it is a recipe for disaster. Unfortunately, many owners and operators of golf carts in Peachtree City are too comfortable drinking and getting behind the wheel of golf carts.

Peachtree City police are now focusing more efforts on cracking down on drunk golf cart drivers in an effort to reduce accidents, injuries, and death. Because Peachtree City is known for its miles of dedicated golf cart paths, this can be a big undertaking. There are “over 10,000 registered golf carts in Peachtree City. It’s a mode of transportation with 100 miles of the cart path, so it is a public safety problem,” said Peachtree City Lt. Mark Brown.

There have been many injuries and even some deaths that have taken place on the city’s cart path. Additionally, police have arrested and charged many people with DUIs who have been found driving intoxicated in their golf carts.

Unfortunately, many people don’t think that the drinking and driving laws apply to operators of golf carts, but they do. Any impaired driver can harm themselves, as well as others sharing the road with them. Peachtree City police want the public to understand that golf carts are considered vehicles in which their operators are held to the same driving laws other motor vehicle operators are held to in Georgia.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are often Peachtree City drunk driving accident victims. This is because intoxicated drivers of golf carts can crash into anyone in their way, which generally involves pedestrians and bicyclists sharing the cart path.

Interestingly, about 15 percent of drunken driving charges in Peachtree City involved golf carts, in 2012.
