Wednesday, September 07, 2011 was a tragic day for three Atlanta families when three fatal Atlanta auto accidents claimed three lives.
At 5 a.m., a pedestrian was attempting to cross I-285 southbound, south of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, when he was struck by a car. The man was wearing dark clothing and the sky was still dark. The driver said that when he saw the man he did not have time to stop. No charges are expected to be filed in this Atlanta pedestrian accident.
Just before 6:30 a.m., there was a fatal crash on the Downtown Connector. 48-year-old Matthew Kelly was driving his Santa Fe on the ramp from I-75/85 southbound to Langford Parkway when he drove off the roadway and into a guardrail, an embankment and a concrete wall. Kelly died at the scene. No one else was involved in the crash.
The final accident occurred at about 6:45 a.m. An Atlanta police officer spotted a stolen vehicle on Peachtree at Paces Ferry Road. The police officer pulled the vehicle over, but as the officer approached the car, the driver fled the scene. He got back in his vehicle and pursued the driver.
The stolen vehicle struck two other cars at the intersection of Peachtree Road and Peachtree Battle. One of the cars turned over, trapping the driver inside. The driver was extricated and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He died from his injuries at 10:25 a.m.
Our condolences are with all who lost friends and family members in these tragic accidents.
