A fatal wreck on I-285 claimed the life of a Norcross man on Saturday, August 3, 2013. This deadly Sandy Springs car crash took place early in the morning around 7:00 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-285 between Glenridge and Roswell roads.
According to Sandy Springs Police, two vehicles collided due to a car bumper that was obstructing the roadway. Apparently, a bumper came loose from another vehicle that crashed just prior to this accident. Driver Ruben Vega, 45, struck the retaining wall, causing his bumper to dislodge and obstruct traffic.
When this occurred, traffic on westbound I-285 slowed. As a tractor-trailer slowed to almost a complete stop, it was hit by another car. Witnesses told police that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of impact. Unfortunately, the driver of that car was unable to bring his car to a stop in time and hit the tractor-trailer truck. This Fulton County car crash claimed the life of that driver, 36-year-old Gerald D. Wallace, of Norcross.
Police have not brought any charges against the driver of the semi-truck; however, Ruben Vega was charged with a lane violation and second degree vehicular homicide, according to Sandy Springs police spokesman Steve Rose.
This fatal crash caused four of the westbound lanes of I-285 to stay closed on Saturday until about 11:00 a.m.
The Fulton County accident attorneys at Shane Smith Law are saddened to hear of this tragic crash and would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Gerald D. Wallace.
