ATLANTA (AP) - An Atlanta police officer was hit by a car on a busy highway while trying to help a man who was struck by a vehicle.
WSB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/sNXKUV) Friday that the pedestrian was killed. The officer suffered head and leg injuries but is expected to recover.
Police said the 27-year-old officer responded to a call that a man was walking along the highway near downtown Atlanta. They say the man ran from the officer when he tried to take him into custody.
The man was hit by a passing car as he ran away from the officer, and the officer was struck by another car while trying to help the man.
Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee said the officer may have broken bones, but that he's in stable condition.
It is always tragic when there are fatalities involved in any pedestrian accident. Atlanta wrongful death attorney Shane Smith would like to offer his heartfelt condolences to the families involved.
