Shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, a truck crashed into a shopping center, killing the truck driver. According to authorities, this Gwinnett County truck accident is still being investigated, as officials are not sure what caused the truck driver to plow into a building.
Children attending a summer camp at Global Karate Studio narrowly avoided being hit by the truck, as 22 kids were two doors down from the business the truck crashed into. The Hair Parlor at 1195 Scenic Highway near Webb Gin House Road and its neighboring restaurant, O Wings, were the scene of this accident.
As these businesses were nearly leveled, it is amazing that no one else was injured. Thankfully, the children two doors down were not harmed, nor was anyone else, as there was no one inside the building with which the truck made impact.
Gwinnett County authorities have identified the truck driver as 66-year-old Donald Samples, of Snellville. They have confirmed that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in this crash, and they are looking into whether or not Samples suffered a medical condition right before the collision.
Bruce Fowler, a witness to the truck accident, said, “I was following him northbound on 124. His driving became erratic and he sped up, went to the right. Last I saw, he jumped the median and came into the strip mall.”
The truck, a 2012 Kenworth T660, belongs to a Nebraska-based freight shipping company, Werner Enterprises. When investigators looked into the trucking company, they found that the fleet has been involved in 926 trucking crashes in the past two years, and 23 of those wrecks produced fatalities.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of this crash.
The Law Office of Shane Smith would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Donald Samples.
