A multi-vehicle accident on Highway 34E left four people injured, including a prison inmate.

The Atlanta car accident occurred on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. 27-year-old Michael Gartner, of Newnan, was driving a blue Kia Sorrento eastbound on 34E. He changed to the left lane and clipped a red Smart car. Both cars went spinning out of control.

The Smart Car veered into the median where it struck an inmate and a guard who were on a prison work detail. It then hit a Coweta County Public Works F-250 truck and trailer before coming to rest on the highway. The Kia crossed into the right lane where it crashed into a utility pole and overturned.

The guard, William Duncan, an employee of the Coweta County Public Works Department, was critically injured and was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. The driver of the Smart Car, Joseph Alexander of Newnan, was also airlifted to the hospital. The Coweta County Prison inmate and Gartner were taken by ambulance to Piedmont Newnan Hospital. No one else was injured.

Gartner has been charged with failure to yield and driving too fast for conditions.
