Woman Flees Hit-and-Run Accident Only to Die in Second Crash

Police believe that alcohol and speed may be contributing factors in the death of a woman who was killed last Tuesday, October 27.

Thirty-year-old Arwen Burns was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox west on Piedmont Road in Marietta. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., The Marietta woman struck a 2003 Honda Pilot near the intersection of Piedmont Road and Morgan Road. Ms. Burns left the scene of the car accident.

Within moments, the woman lost control of her vehicle in a curve near the intersection of Piedmont Road and Piedmont Enclave Court. The vehicle traveled into the center median of Piedmont Road. It crashed into a group of trees and stopped. Ms, Burns died at the scene as a result of her injuries.

The driver of the Honda Pilot, 44-year-old Jae Park of Acworth, was treated at the scene for minor injuries and was released.

Fortunately, in this case, the DUI victim sustained only minor injuries. She was lucky. Nationwide, almost one-third of fatal traffic accidents involve a driver who is under the influence. Last year in Georgia, 415 people died in alcohol-related crashes. These are deaths that should never have happened. Mothers Against Drunk Driving calls driving under the influence “the most frequently committed violent crime in America”.
