It’s more common than you think. You’re in a wreck. You’re starting to recover and feel better. And then BAM, you’re in another one just a few weeks later. Clients ask me all the time:
“Does the second wreck ruin my first case?”
Let’s break this down together.
🟢The short answer? No, it doesn’t ruin your case.
🔴But yes, it does make everything more complicated.
Here’s what you need to know if you’ve been in multiple car accidents close together.
❓Can I Still File Claims for Both Accidents?
Yes. You can have a valid claim for each wreck. But separating the two injuries (and how much each crash contributed) becomes much harder.
Why? Because insurance companies will point fingers at each other. One says, “That injury came from the other accident.” The other says, “Not our problem; blame the first crash.” This is where clear medical documentation becomes essential.

❓What Does My Doctor Need to Document?
To put it simply, everything. We need:
- A clear timeline of your pain before and after each accident
- Notes showing any changes in symptoms
- Details on whether treatment plans changed after the second crash
For example:
“The patient was at a pain level 5 before the second accident, now reporting pain at an 8. Referred for an MRI post-second wreck.”
If your symptoms didn’t change much, it becomes harder to prove which accident caused what. But if your doctor documents new pain, worsening symptoms, or new limitations; that gives us the leverage we need to argue both claims.
❓Should I Have Two Different Lawyers?
You can definitely have two lawyers; however, that’s not ideal and here’s why…
In most cases, it’s easier (and more effective) to have one attorney or team handling both cases. That way:
- Records are shared
- Strategies are aligned
- There’s no conflict or confusion between firms
Plus, adjusters will know about both wrecks anyway; they see everything in your claim history. Trying to keep one case a secret just doesn’t work in today’s world.

❓Does the Second Case Ruin My First Case?
Not at all, but it does make it harder to settle. The more time between the wrecks, the easier it usually is to separate them. But if they happened just two days or weeks apart, we may need to present both cases together.
That might even mean:
- Sending a combined demand
- Asking for both insurers to contribute toward a single settlement
- Fighting harder to show your total injuries across both events
And yes, we do this all the time.

❓What Else Affects the Strength of Both Cases?
A few key things:
- How clearly your pain changed after the second wreck
- What your doctor wrote down about those charges
- The severity of each accident (Was one a minor bump and the other a rollover?)
The biggest thing is the more we know, the more we can help.
Final Thoughts from Shane
If you’ve been in more than one wreck close together, you’re not alone; and it doesn’t mean you don’t have a case.
It just means we have to take a more careful approach:
- Get clear medical records
- Understand your full injury timeline
- Coordinate everything between cases
That’s our job; and we’re here to help.
