Should You Talk to an Insurance Adjuster After a Car Accident?
After a car accident, it is very common for an insurance adjuster to call you quickly and ask for information. Many people believe they are required to speak with the adjuster right away. In most situations, that is not true. Today, Shane Smith joined Eugene Robinson on Charlotte Today to discuss this topic and share general guidance on what people should know after a car accident.
If you do speak with an insurance company, you should limit the conversation to property damage only, such as where your vehicle is located and what damage it has. You should not discuss how the accident happened, and you should not talk about your injuries or how you are feeling.
Insurance adjusters are trained to gather information that can later be used to reduce or deny your claim. Even simple statements made early in a case can be taken out of context or used to minimize your injuries.
The safest approach is to let your attorney handle all communication with the insurance company. This protects you, avoids misunderstandings, and allows your legal team to present your claim properly and at the right time.
If you have been in a crash and are unsure what to say or who to speak with, we are happy to help.
