DUI Driver Who Hit Homeless Encampment Pleads Not Guilty

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2,597 people were killed in United States traffic accidents in December 2010. A 27-year-old man suspected of driving drunk when he crashed into a homeless encampment in an early morning accident in another state pled not guilty to DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. The accident killed a sleeping 62-year-old homeless military veteran after the driver lost control of his SUV. He allegedly drove off a 25-mph off-ramp and through a guardrail before driving into the homeless encampment under the freeway. The driver continued until he crashed into a cement overpass down the street.
