Hit and Run Driver Convicted for 5 Atlanta Car Accident Deaths

The young woman who killed five people in an Atlanta hit-and-run car crash in 2009 has been sentenced to at least 36 years in prison. Twenty-four-year-old Aimee Michael was convicted last week of starting the fatal Easter Sunday crash that killed three children and two adults.  The crash happened when Michael sideswiped a Mercedes that was driving in the adjacent lane on Camp Creek Parkway south of Atlanta.  The collision sent the car spinning into an oncoming Volkswagen.   All four of the occupants in the Mercedes died: Robert Carter, his wife Delisia Carter, their newborn son, Ethan, and their 9-year-old daughter, Kayla Lemons. The driver of the Volkswagen, 43-year-old Tracie Johnson of Atlanta, sustained a broken hip, a broken collarbone, and serious internal injuries; her 6-year-old daughter, Morgan Johnson, died. Michael was uninjured and left the scene. Aimee Michael was convicted on 13 felony counts and two traffic misdemeanors for causing the Atlanta traffic accident: five counts of vehicular homicide in the first degree, one count of serious injury by vehicle, six counts of hit and run, one count of tampering with evidence and two misdemeanors traffic offenses – reckless driving and failure to maintain a lane.
