Know Your Rights After a Car Accident: Rental Cars (Part Two)
This is part two of our series on rental cars after a car accident.
Today, I want to talk about a few common problems people run into when trying to get a rental vehicle.
First, age restrictions
If you are younger, typically between 18 and 20 years old, many rental car companies will not rent to you at all.
In those situations, the at-fault driver’s insurance company may say, “We offered you a rental, it’s not our fault the rental company won’t give you one.”
When that happens, you still have rights.
You can request loss of use compensation instead.
That means the insurance company should pay you a daily amount for each day you are without your vehicle.
It may not replace the convenience of having a car, but even $40 or $50 a day can help cover rides or transportation costs.
Second, credit card versus debit card
Most rental companies require a credit card.
If you only have a debit card, they often place a large hold on your account.
That can tie up hundreds or even thousands of dollars until the car is returned.
If possible, it is always better to use a credit card when renting a vehicle after an accident.
The takeaway
If you cannot get a rental because of age or payment restrictions:
- Ask for loss of use money
• Plan ahead for credit card requirements
• Protect your finances before you get stuck
