Celebrity Crime Report: Latest Update in the R. Kelly Trial
In this week’s Celebrity Crime Report, we are following the ongoing criminal case involving R. Kelly.
What is happening now
- Kelly is currently facing another criminal trial tied to allegations involving a relationship that allegedly began when the alleged victim was a minor and continued for many years.
Prosecutors claim that the relationship began when the girl was 13 years old and continued into adulthood. The case also includes allegations that witnesses and family members were pressured and financially influenced years ago, which prosecutors say affected earlier testimony.
This case follows a separate federal case in which R. Kelly was already sentenced to a lengthy prison term for racketeering and sex trafficking related charges, with restitution also ordered.
Why this case is different from the past
- Kelly was previously tried and acquitted in a related case in 2008.
In the current trial, prosecutors are presenting new testimony from witnesses who also testified years ago. Some of those witnesses are now testifying under immunity agreements and are offering accounts that differ from their earlier statements.
Because of that, the credibility of past testimony and the circumstances surrounding it are a major focus of this trial.
Court developments
- The defense has requested a mistrial more than once, arguing that R. Kelly cannot receive a fair trial.
- The judge has denied those requests.
- One juror was dismissed after reporting severe anxiety related to the graphic nature of the evidence, and an alternate juror was seated.
The case has now moved to jury deliberations.
Important legal reminder
These are allegations being evaluated by a jury. The final outcome will depend on how the jurors weigh the testimony and evidence presented in court.
We will continue to share updates as the case develops.
