R. Kelly Trial Update: Jury Returns Guilty Verdict
We are sharing a brief update following our recent post on the criminal trial involving R. Kelly.
The jury has reached a verdict
The jury has returned its decision, and the outcome is not favorable for R. Kelly.
He was found guilty of serious federal charges, including:
- Coercing minors into criminal sexual activity
- Producing child sexual abuse material
He was acquitted on a separate charge related to attempting to obstruct a prior investigation.
While the defense emphasized that he was found not guilty on more individual counts than guilty, the convictions that were returned are the most serious charges in the case.
Prosecutors seek additional prison time
Prosecutors have announced they will ask the court to impose any new sentence on top of R. Kelly’s existing 30-year federal prison sentence.
This would mean the new sentence would be served consecutively, not at the same time.
At this stage:
- R. Kelly has been convicted
- He has not yet been sentenced in this case
- Sentencing will occur at a later hearing
Other defendants in the case
Two former associates, including his former business manager and a former assistant, were also charged with conspiracy-related offenses tied to child sexual abuse material and obstruction.
Both have entered not guilty pleas, and their cases remain pending.
We will continue to share updates as sentencing and related proceedings move forward.
