Why You Still Need to See a Medical Doctor Even If You Are Seeing a Chiropractor or Physical Therapist
One question we hear all the time from clients is this:
“Why do I need to see a medical doctor if I’m already treating with a chiropractor or physical therapist?”
It is a fair question, and the short answer is this: seeing a medical doctor protects both your health and your case.
It Strengthens Your Injury Claim
Chiropractors and physical therapists play an important role in recovery, but insurance companies often give more weight to a medical doctor’s diagnosis.
When a medical doctor confirms or supports what your chiropractor or physical therapist is finding, it adds credibility and strength to your case. Without that medical support, insurance companies may try to downplay your injuries or label your case as minor.
That can directly affect the value of your claim.
Medical Doctors Look for More Serious Injuries
Medical doctors are trained differently and have access to diagnostic tools that chiropractors and physical therapists typically do not.
A medical doctor is more likely to:
- Order X rays
- Order an MRI or CT scan
- Identify disc bulges or herniations
- Detect nerve compression or spinal injuries
If you are experiencing radiating pain, numbness, or tingling in your arms or legs, that is a red flag. Those symptoms often require imaging to rule out more serious injuries that cannot be seen through physical therapy alone.
Access to Additional Treatment Options
Medical doctors also have access to treatments that chiropractors and physical therapists cannot provide.
This can include:
- Epidural steroid injections
- Facet joint injections
- Other interventional pain management options
These treatments can significantly reduce pain and prevent long-term problems. In many cases, they help patients avoid surgery.
Serious Injuries Deserve Serious Evaluation
Chiropractic care and physical therapy are often part of the solution, but they should not be the only voices involved when injuries are significant.
If symptoms persist, worsen, or include nerve-related pain, a medical doctor should be involved. That protects your health first and ensures your case is taken seriously by the insurance company.
