A Full Week of Work, Travel, and Family Time
This past week was a busy one. I started out in the office on Monday and Tuesday, then flew to California on Wednesday for a business group meeting. The focus of the trip was strengthening and growing business relationships through better networking.
Holly came with me since there was an event Friday night, which meant we also got some quality time together on Wednesday and Friday. On Thursday, she was bravely “stuck” in California on her own, suffering through the mall, the beach, and all the other hardships that come with being in paradise.

Staying at Our Favorite Spot in Dana Point
We stayed at our favorite place in Dana Point, the Surf & Sand Resort. It is easily one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. Because it was built before newer construction restrictions, it sits right on the water. You can literally fall asleep to the sound of the ocean.
If you love the beach and enjoy sleeping to the sound of waves rolling in, I highly recommend it.
A Mystery Only Hotel Gyms Can Create
While we were there, I found myself entertained once again by something I always notice in hotel gyms: missing dumbbells. There is always one weight missing. Never the full set. Not both 25s or both 30s. Just one.
I cannot figure out who steals a single dumbbell from a hotel gym, or how someone even packs that into a suitcase without noticing.

Early Mornings and Incredible Views
Because Holly and I were still on East Coast time, we woke up extremely early every morning. One night I was wide awake at 2 a.m. because my body thought it was 6.
The upside was an incredible sunrise, along with what I can only describe as a “moonset” as it disappeared over the water. The view from the balcony was absolutely stunning.

Branding Déjà Vu and a Strange Ocean Visitor
At one point, I spotted a billboard in California using almost the exact same bright yellow we use in our Charlotte ads. I had to snap a picture because apparently someone out west has the same branding instincts.
Holly also noticed a strange fish from the balcony. It was not a shark or a dolphin, but it scared the other fish away. Our best guess was a barracuda. If anyone knows what it might have been, I would love to hear your thoughts.
Cowboy Night and a California Sunset
Friday night’s event had a cowboy theme, so I broke out one of my old dusters and a cowboy hat. Holly joined in as well. We watched the sunset, then spent some time at one of the hotel bar areas before heading into the event.
Looking Ahead to a Stacked UFC Card
I am also excited about the first UFC event of the year. UFC 324 is coming up in late January, and the card is loaded.
Justin Gaethje is always electric. Paddy Pimblett has been a favorite of mine since seeing him early in his UFC career in New York with my son. Kayla Harrison is incredible. Sean O’Malley is a family favorite thanks to my son. Derrick Lewis is always entertaining, and fighters like Grasso and Rose never disappoint. From top to bottom, this card should be a great one.
Christmas Tree Trouble and a Warranty Surprise
Saturday was Christmas tree day back home, but our Roomba decided to eat one of the cords. When I tried to open the receiver box, I discovered it used triangle screws, which of course I did not have.
I ended up taking it to my brother, who had the right tool. I also ordered a small triangle screw set on Amazon just in case this happens again. The Roomba had completely ripped the receiver out.
The surprising part was the company’s response. We told them what happened, fully expecting to buy a replacement. Instead, they said they would mail us a new one under warranty. That saved me from having to buy the $30 replacement online.
Traditions, Roller Derby, and the Start of the Season
We also made our annual Hallmark ornament trip with my mom, which is a tradition we keep every year. Once the replacement part arrives, the Christmas tree will finally be lit.
One photo from this week was taken at Curious Cantina in Peachtree City, which has great drinks and a fun atmosphere. Another was from the plane, and another from roller derby in Atlanta.
Roller derby is gearing up for a new season in both Atlanta and Charlotte. Like many sports, it took a big hit during COVID, but it is rebuilding. If you have never been, I highly recommend checking it out. It is fast, wild, and a blast to watch. I had to ask someone how scoring worked because I had no idea, but we will definitely be going when the season starts.
A Quick Holiday Shipping Reminder
As we officially move into the Christmas season, a quick reminder that shipping times are slowing down. Items that used to take a day or two are now taking three or four. Orders that normally arrive in a week are taking even longer.
A couple of my gifts may not show up until the 20th, so I am sweating it a bit. If you are shopping online, I recommend ordering sooner rather than later.
Hope everyone is enjoying the start of December and getting ready for the season.
Until next week,
Shane
