That is the reality for Jeff Martinet Jr., a traumatic brain injury survivor who transformed his experience into a message of resilience, gratitude, and purpose. In part two of this Mind Matters conversation, Kiley Como explores what life really looks like after the hospital, after rehab, and after the world expects you to “move on.”
Rebuilding Life After the Hospital
Jeff’s recovery did not end when he went home. In fact, it became a lifelong process. Even today, more than two decades later, he continues physical therapy.
But despite the challenges, he pushed forward.
- He returned to school
- Made up for missed coursework
- Graduated with his class
He even walked across the stage at graduation, supported by a friend, in a moment that symbolized both struggle and triumph.
That moment was more than a milestone. It was proof that progress is possible.
Finding a New Direction
Instead, he pivoted.
- He explored art
- He pursued personal development
- He discovered a passion for speaking
That shift ultimately led him to become an international speaker, sharing his story to inspire others.
His journey highlights an important truth:
Recovery is not just about getting back to who you were. It is about discovering who you can become.
The Moment Purpose Took Shape
A therapist asked him to speak to a group of young drivers in a court-appointed program. His role was to share his story and the consequences of risky behavior behind the wheel.
That one opportunity changed everything.
He realized his experience could help others. From that moment on, he committed to using his story to make an impact.
“Make Every Second Count”
Life is not guaranteed.
His crash happened in an instant. And just as quickly, anyone’s life can change.
That is why his motto, Make Every Second Count, is not just a phrase. It is a way of living.
It means:
- Taking action now, not later
- Valuing relationships and connection
- Using your voice and abilities
- Letting go of fear and hesitation
As Jeff explains, too many people leave their potential unrealized. Too many dreams go unpursued.
He refuses to let that be his story.
Managing Long-Term Challenges
- Fatigue
- Cognitive overload
- Emotional fluctuations
- Physical limitations
For Jeff, one of the most impactful tools has been gratitude.
Even during difficult times, he focused on:
- Celebrating others
- Finding small positives
- Maintaining belief in future progress
Gratitude, he explains, is not just a mindset. It is a proven way to improve mental and emotional well-being.
“Grow Through What You Go Through”
It is easy to go through hardship. It is harder to learn from it.
Jeff emphasizes:
- Challenges are often lessons
- Obstacles can create opportunity
- Growth prevents repetition of the same struggles
In other words, the obstacle is not in the way.
The obstacle is the way.
A Message for Professionals and Caregivers
- Attorneys
- Nurses
- Therapists
- Educators
His message is clear:
Do not underestimate survivors.
A brain injury does not mean a person is less capable. It means their abilities may look different.
He encourages professionals to:
- Avoid assumptions
- Maintain expectations
- Offer support without pity
Every individual has strengths. The goal is to help them rediscover and build on those strengths.
Redefining Ability
There is no such thing as inability. Only different ability.
Everyone has limitations. Everyone has strengths.
A brain injury does not erase potential. It simply changes the path forward.
What “Making Every Second Count” Looks Like
It can be as simple as:
- Calling a loved one
- Encouraging someone who is struggling
- Taking a step forward in recovery
- Choosing gratitude over frustration
It is about being intentional with the time you have.
Final Thoughts
It is the beginning of a new one.
Through resilience, mindset, and purpose, it is possible to turn even the most devastating experience into something meaningful.
If you or someone you love is navigating life after a serious injury, you do not have to do it alone.
