A Busy but Surprisingly Laid-Back New Year’s Week
Last week was a busy, busy week, but it was also strangely laid back at the same time. That sounds contradictory, but that’s exactly how it felt. It was New Year’s week for us, and while there was plenty going on, there was also a lot of downtime, which was honestly pretty nice.

Full House and Family Time
We had the boys in town, and Noah’s fiancée was still with us. She drove in a day or two before New Year’s Eve, so the house was full again. That part never gets old.
Holly and I did not know what the boys’ plans were for New Year’s Eve. Normally, we have friends come into town and celebrate together, but this year the timing worked differently. They planned to come in on New Year’s Day instead of New Year’s Eve.
Eventually, they decided they wanted to go downtown to Atlanta for New Year’s Eve. I hate the idea of anyone being on the road late at night, especially on New Year’s Eve, so they stayed downtown and drove back the next morning. They had a great time, which is what matters most.
Last-Minute Plans That Worked Out Perfectly
Once the boys made their plans, Holly and I realized we should probably make some of our own. Unfortunately, we waited until New Year’s Eve, which made finding reservations difficult.
After striking out at a couple of places, we ended up at our favorite Mexican restaurant. It was not fancy, but it was perfect. We enjoyed a great meal, felt relaxed, and did not feel rushed. Sometimes the unplanned option really is the best one.

Ringing in the New Year
We stayed up until midnight, watched the New Year roll in, and made a few phone calls. I called my dad at midnight and probably woke him up, but I wanted to wish him a Happy New Year. One of the kids called us right at midnight too. Those small moments are the ones that stick with you.

New Year’s Day Traditions and Extended Celebrations
On New Year’s Day, a friend came into town, and we had dinner with my family. We did the traditional “good luck” food, something we try to keep up with every year.
Because friends stayed longer than usual, all the Christmas desserts stuck around too. My Christmas dessert stretch lasted until Sunday. Not ideal for my diet, but hopefully short-lived.
Life With Luna and Ted
There were plenty of pictures taken with Luna and Ted, along with lots of relaxing and time together. The boys headed back to college on Friday, and Sam took Luna with him to High Point. She seems to be adjusting well so far.
Ted noticed at first. He looked around like he was searching for her. After a day or so, he seemed more relaxed. Luna is usually all over him, so I think Ted enjoyed the extra rest and the extra attention from Holly.
Wrapping Up the Holidays
Saturday and Sunday were spent cleaning, straightening up the house, and putting things back together after having everyone in town. Most of the Christmas decorations were already down before New Year’s Eve. Holly always likes to get the tree down before New Year’s Day because of a superstition about starting the year cluttered.
By Sunday, things slowed down even more. We rested, enjoyed the quiet, and recovered from a very full few weeks.
Setting Goals for the Year Ahead
I also spent time working on my goals and targets for the new year, something I do every single year. I look at my health, spirituality, family, and relationships, then focus on business goals. After that, I break everything down into what needs to happen in the next month.
That process helps me start the year with intention instead of reacting to whatever comes next.
Looking Ahead
That was our week. Busy, laid back, reflective, and a good transition from the holidays into the new year. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.
Until next week,
Shane
