I started the week making travel arrangements, which, if I’m being honest, is not one of my favorite tasks. I have an upcoming business trip to Miami in a few weeks, and trying to coordinate flights, schedules, and logistics always feels more time-consuming than it should.
Finding a flight that’s both affordable and convenient for your schedule can feel like navigating a maze of its own. I’ve said it before; I’d almost rather just hand the task off to a travel agent. But, of course, I still end up doing it myself.
Thankfully, things turned around mid-week with a truly exciting opportunity.
Experiencing the Porsche Driving Track
On Wednesday, Holly and I were invited by one of our vendors to participate in the Porsche Driving Experience, and I have to say, it exceeded expectations.
We had the chance to drive three different Porsche models, including two of the sportier ones and a Cayman. One of the most surprising highlights was taking the Cayman on their off-road obstacle course. Yes, off-road in a Porsche.
The track included steep vertical climbs and uneven terrain, including one section where the vehicle tilted on an embankment, balancing on just two wheels. It felt like we were scaling a mountain.
There was also a specially designed slick surface for drifting, which made the experience even more memorable. It was high-adrenaline, hands-on, and honestly one of the most enjoyable driving experiences I’ve had.
They also had a wall showcasing the evolution of Porsche vehicles through the years, and it sparked an idea: how cool would it be to create something similar at the firm? A visual timeline of our own growth and milestones could be both fun and inspiring.

Halloween Prep and Traditions
Coming off the Porsche event, we rolled straight into Halloween prep. As many of you know, Halloween is one of our favorite family traditions. It’s the kickoff to the holiday season in our household, and we go all in.
Each year, Holly and I host a Halloween party at our home. Over time, it’s evolved into a full-scale production. I focus on building and setting up our box maze for the kids outside, while Holly takes the lead on interior decorations and organizing food. Her creativity inside the house always impresses, and together we make it something special for our guests, especially the younger ones.
On Thursday night, we attended a masquerade ball hosted by one of our favorite local restaurants, Van Zandt. Since Halloween night itself is usually reserved for our party, this was a rare opportunity to get out and enjoy a festive event beforehand. It was a great time and a welcome change of pace.
Halloween Night at the Smith House
On Halloween night, I suited up as a pirate, which made perfect sense since our dog Teddy recently lost an eye. We now affectionately refer to him as “Pirate Ted.” I matched my eyepatch to the same side as his missing eye, though I’m not sure he was overly amused by our coordinated look.
Our other dog, Luna, wore a carrot costume. She tolerated it for a while, but I suspect she would have preferred something a bit more dignified or nothing at all. Holly went as Wednesday Addams, and she completely owned the character.
Both sets of our parents dropped by during the evening, and my brother also joined in on the fun. The kids had a blast running through the maze, and we received great feedback on the decorations. It was a fun, festive evening with family and friends, exactly what Halloween should be.

A Tradition Rooted in Family
Halloween became “our holiday” years ago, especially when we were living near Fort Benning, Georgia, and later in Clarksville, Tennessee. Traveling on a weeknight with young children just wasn’t feasible, so we made the decision to stay home and create our own tradition.
What started with a few inexpensive decorations has now become a full collection that we’ve built up over 25 years. We’ve accumulated a mix of everything, from the simple and a bit cheesy to some more elaborate items. Lately, I’ve leaned into blow-up decorations, although I’ve noticed they don’t seem to last as long as they used to. Still, they bring a lot of joy, and we love seeing the neighborhood kids enjoy the setup.

Ending the Week with Family and Fitness
To round out the week, I kept another important tradition alive—working out with my dad. We try to go to the gym together every Friday. Sometimes my travel schedule gets in the way, but when we do manage to make it happen, it’s a great opportunity to spend quality time together and prioritize our health.
Looking Ahead
Last week was packed; from business planning and fast cars to family traditions and Halloween fun. It was one of those weeks that reminds me how important it is to balance professional momentum with personal moments.
As we head into the next stretch of the year, I’m looking forward to keeping that balance going. We’ve got more travel, more projects, and, of course, the rest of the holiday season ahead.
In the meantime, I hope your Halloween was as fun and meaningful as ours and that you took a moment to enjoy the people and moments that matter most.
Stay safe, stay grateful, and talk soon.
