Snowpocalypse in the South
This past week felt like the official kickoff to Southern Snow Watch 2026. You know the kind—where everyone panics at the first mention of flurries and suddenly bread, milk, and eggs disappear from every grocery store shelf within 50 miles.
It all started midweek. I was planning to fly up to Charlotte early this week, but by Wednesday, all the weather models were throwing around words like “snowpocalypse” and “ice event” across Georgia and North Carolina. So it quickly turned into a week of watching weather alerts and making backup plans. By Thursday, we pulled the plug on the trip entirely. I’m not interested in getting stuck on I-85 in a rental car while sleet covers the windshield.

HVAC Troubles Just in Time for Freezing Temps
To make things even more fun, our basement heating unit stopped working right when temps were about to drop. Basement went from “cool and cozy” to “grab-a-parka” real quick. Thankfully, we got lucky—parts came in fast, and by Wednesday, the heat was flowing again. The HVAC team got it fixed just in time for the cold snap, and that basement went from a meat locker back to livable.
Will the UFC Party Survive the Snow?
Saturday was supposed to be our first UFC watch party of the year—first numbered card, big names on the fight list. But with all the weather drama, we weren’t sure how many people would show up. Would it snow in time to shut everything down? Would people brave the cold for some good fights?
Turns out, about 75% of the crew still rolled through. Southerners may panic at snow, but we’ll risk icy roads for a great UFC card and some wings.
One of the fights I was most looking forward to—the co-main women’s bout—got scrapped last minute. Kim Harrison had a neck injury that’s going to require surgery. Total bummer. But that cancellation moved Sugar Sean into the spotlight, and around our house, that’s always a win. My son is a mega fan. Which means we’re all Sugar Sean fans by association.
Sean looked strong. It was a three-round fight against Petr Yan, and like usual, he really turned it on in the third. He got the decision win, and our living room erupted like we were front row in Vegas.
The main event? Justin Gaethje versus Paddy Pimblett. I’m a big fan of Paddy’s, but let’s be honest—any fight with Gaethje means it’s gonna be a war. He’s not in there to dance. He’s in there to throw hands. And he did. It went all three rounds, and Gaethje took the win by decision. Not the outcome I was hoping for, but still an awesome fight.

Goodbye ESPN, Hello Paramount+
This was also the first UFC numbered event on Paramount+, and let me just say—it’s about time. ESPN+ always felt like a money pit. You’re already paying for the annual membership, then another $70+ every time there’s a pay-per-view. Paramount+ runs $15 a month, and boom—everything’s there. They even have a multi-camera view option for the fights. I didn’t get to mess with it since we had people over, but next weekend, I’m definitely trying it out.

Snow Play, Dog Edition
While we were glued to the fights, the snow finally rolled in. Not a full whiteout, but enough to get the boys outside, and more importantly, our dog Luna. She was in heaven. Rolling around, bouncing through the snow like a little kid. She wore herself out playing, came in soaked, crashed on the floor, and didn’t move for hours. Total snow day energy.
Southern Homeowner Pipe Survival Mode
With the temperature drop, we did what every Southern homeowner does when panic mode sets in. Dripped the faucets. Opened the under-sink cabinets. Tried to channel heat toward pipes that were definitely not designed for sub-30 weather. Our Georgia home just isn’t made for this kind of cold. No busted pipes so far—fingers crossed.
A Little Date Night Before the Deep Freeze
Before things got too icy, Holly and I snuck out Friday night to one of our favorite local spots—Van Sants. Great food, cozy vibe, perfect before everything froze over. Sometimes a good dinner out is the perfect reset before a weekend of chaos.
Steam Clickbait & Hidden Bookshelves
Two random things from the week. First: I clicked on a Steam ad for what looked like a killer deal on games. Big discounts, flashy graphics—but when I got there, the games looked… rough. Like low-budget early 2000s PC games. Total bait and switch. I’m not above a deal, but I’m not downloading junk.
Second: hidden bookcases. Since we’ve been designing the new house, I’ve been seeing more and more ads for those sliding or secret bookshelf doors. I’ll admit—they look cool. But I wonder if anyone’s actually gotten one installed. Do they hold up? Do they really look “secret” or does it feel like a cheesy movie prop after a month? If you’ve got one, let me know. I’m tempted.
Hoping for Warmth (and School to Stay Open)
The boys may be rooting for snow days, but I’m rooting for things to thaw out. By Sunday night, talk of school closures started. If the temps stay low, we might be in for another round of cancelations. Either way, I hope everyone out there stays safe, stays warm, and avoids any busted pipes or power outages.
Until next week,
Shane
