By Shane Smith, Personal Injury Lawyer – Shane Smith Law
As a personal injury lawyer who talks to a lot of car crash victims, one thing I hear over and over again is this:
“I’m scared to drive now.”
“I can’t even ride in a car without panicking.”
“Every time I see headlights coming toward me, I freeze up.”
Sound familiar?
If so, you’re not alone—and you’re not crazy. After a major accident, emotional trauma like PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is more common than most people think. Especially in crashes involving:
- Semi-trucks or commercial vehicles
- Rollover accidents
- High-speed collisions
- Situations involving children or passengers
The Two Types of Post-Crash Trauma
I like to break this down into two general categories:
1. Temporary PTSD
This is the more common version. You feel scared to drive, maybe anxious in traffic, or nervous at intersections. It can last for a few weeks—but usually goes away on its own or with a little help.
In most cases, you’ll feel better within 30 days.
Talking to someone—whether it’s a counselor, therapist, or even your doctor—can help speed up the healing.
2. Ongoing or Severe PTSD
Sometimes, it doesn’t just “go away.”
I had a case where a truck rolled onto a client’s vehicle, crushing their windshield. After that, she couldn’t handle oncoming traffic. She’d panic every time she saw headlights.
For some clients, the fear is so strong they stop driving altogether. Others can’t even ride in a car as a passenger. And in children, it’s even worse—nightmares, crying, fear of riding with anyone.

Why Treatment Matters—Even if You Weren’t Physically Injured
Here’s something a lot of people don’t realize:
You can suffer PTSD from a car crash even if your physical injuries are minor.
That emotional toll is real—but harder to prove. And when it comes time to argue your case with the insurance company, we need medical documentation to support it.
That means:
- Seeing a therapist
- Getting a diagnosis
- Keeping track of how this fear impacts your daily life
Without that documentation, it’s much harder for us to show the insurance company how this crash affected your mental health.
