After a car accident, one of the questions I get asked all the time is:
“What is Med Pay?”
Or “What does medical payments coverage actually do?”
Let’s break it down in plain English.
💡What is Med Pay?
Medical Payments Coverage, also called Med Pay, is an optional type of insurance you can add to your auto policy.
It helps cover medical bills and related expenses after an accident, no matter who caused the wreck.
You can usually buy it in small increments like:
- $1,000
- $2,000
- $5,000
- $10,000 or more
And the best part?
It’s cheap. Often just a few dollars a month.

🧾What Does Med Pay Cover?
Med Pay reimburses you for:
- ER bills
- Co-pays
- Physical Therapy
- Prescription medications
- Medical equipment (like crutched, walkers, or scooters)
- Even things like ambulance rides
It’s a reimbursement policy; so typically, you pay first and then get reimbursed quickly. Most of our clients see a check in 30 days or less.
🚫It Doesn’t matter Who Caused the Accident
One of the best things about Med Pay is that it’s no–fault coverage.
That means:
- If you caused the wreck, Med Pay still applies.
- If someone else caused it, Med Pay still applies.
- If you were a passenger, it still applies.
And if you had passengers in your car, each of them is covered individually; up to the full Med Pay limit per person.
Example:
If you have $5,000 in Med Pay and 4 people were in your car, each person may be eligible for up to $5,000 for their own medical bills.

💰Why Get med Pay If You Have Health Insurance?
Even if you already have health insurance, Med Pay is still worth it.
Why? Because:
- Most health plans have big deductibles
- Med Pay can cover your out–of–pocket costs
- It often pays faster and with fewer hoops
💡Pro Tip: I personally set my Med Pay limit equal to my health insurance deductible. That way, if I’m ever in a wreck, I’m not paying anything out of pocket.

⚠️Do I Have to Pay It Back?
In some states, Med Pay must be reimbursed from your settlement. In others, it doesn’t.
This depends on:
- Where you live
- What your insurance policy says
- Whether you attorney
Even if you do have to pay it back, it helps you stay out of collections and avoid late payments while your case is ongoing.
Ask your lawyer about this. It’s very state–specific.
Final Thoughts from Shane
If you’ve been in a wreck, whether you caused it or not, Med Pay can make a big difference.
It gives you a buffer when medical bills start rolling in. It covers your passengers. And it’s one of the most affordable add-ons you can get.
I highly recommend it for everyone.
