Who Pays My Storage and Towing Costs if I’m Injured in a Car Accident?
After a car accident, most people focus on injuries and medical bills—but what about your car? Who pays for the towing fees and storage charges while your vehicle is sitting in a tow yard? If you’re recovering from injuries, the last thing you need is to worry about daily storage fees piling up. At Shane Smith Law, we help clients navigate the real costs that come after a crash, and that includes making sure you don’t get stuck with surprise bills.

Who Is Responsible for Towing and Storage Costs?
If another driver caused the wreck, their insurance company is typically responsible for paying your vehicle towing and storage costs, but only up to a point. The insurance company is only obligated to pay for a “reasonable” period of storage, often 3 to 7 days. After that, they may refuse to cover additional days unless you move your vehicle or make other arrangements.
What Happens If They Delay?
Insurance companies are notorious for dragging their feet. If the at-fault driver’s insurance hasn’t accepted liability or hasn’t inspected your vehicle quickly, you may be stuck in limbo. The tow yard doesn’t wait for the insurance company—they charge you daily. And once storage fees get too high, the lot may begin the process to auction or scrap your vehicle.

What Should You Do After a Crash?
- Get your vehicle out of storage quickly. Even if you’re hurt, it’s important to act fast. Ask a family member or friend to help move the car to your home, a shop, or a free storage facility.
- File a claim right away. Don’t wait for the at-fault driver to do it. Start your property damage claim immediately.
- Track everything in writing. Save your towing receipt, storage invoice, and any communication with the tow yard or insurance company.

What If the Insurance Company Won’t Pay?
If the insurance company delays or denies payment for storage and towing, you may need a lawyer to step in and get them moving. We often help clients recover those fees as part of their overall injury claim. In some cases, your own insurance may pay under collision coverage and seek reimbursement later.
How Shane Smith Law Can Help
At Shane Smith Law, we do more than help you recover for your injuries. We fight to make sure the insurance company pays for all the consequences of the crash, including your vehicle costs. We also help you avoid unnecessary fees by guiding you through the process early.
