ATLANTA -- A school community is in mourning after a car accident that killed one teacher and critically injured another.
Forty-year-old Shireen Haynes of College Park was riding in a car with two other passengers when they were pushed into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer.
The crash happened on Camp Creek Parkway near Campbellton Road on Monday afternoon.
Investigators said Haynes of College Park was pronounced dead at the scene. She moved to Georgia from New York a few months ago and taught math at Sandtown Middle School.
The two passengers, fellow Sandtown math teacher Kay Price and her husband James Price, are both in critical condition at an area hospital.
Authorities say the crash occurred when a female teenager lost control of her car and collided with Haynes' Saturn, which then spun across the median and hit an oncoming semi-truck.
Late Tuesday, Fulton County officers charged the teen with failure to maintain her line, driving on a restricted license, and suspended registration.
Both the teen and her mother may face vehicular homicide charges. The teen was driving on a provisional license, which would require an adult in the car.
The girl and her passenger, another teenager, were not injured.
Grief counselors spent the day at Sandtown Middle School helping students and teachers deal with the news. The school released this statement from principal Kine Geathers Wednesday morning:
The staff and students at Sandtown are saddened by the tragedy that has resulted in the death of one of our beloved teachers. Ms. Haynes very quickly became an important part of the Sandtown family. We extended our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and loved ones.
We also continue to pray for the swift recovery of our teacher Ms. Price and her husband, who was severely injured in this accident. This is a difficult time for students and staff. We will continue to find comfort in the beautiful memories Ms. Haynes has left for us to cherish. Please remember the Haynes and Price families, along with our Sandtown faculty, students, and staff.
