According to a report by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), nearly 10 percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2011 were between 15 and 20 years old. The report indicated that inexperience was a factor in the fatalities, but that other issues came into play.
In addition to inexperience, the report cited the following factors:
- Driving with an invalid license—Of the 4,347 young drivers who were involved in fatal accidents, 33 percent did not have a valid driver's license or had previous license suspensions or revocations at the time of the accident.
- Alcohol consumption—Nearly a third (32 percent) of 15- to 20-year-old drivers who were killed in accidents had a blood alcohol level of 0.01 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher and 28 percent had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher.
- Failure to wear seat belts—Young drivers were less likely to fasten seat belts when they had been drinking. The report indicated that 57 percent of young drivers involved in fatal accidents who were drinking also were not wearing seat belts.
