Retread Tires can Cause Accidents

Tires are one of the most essential pieces of equipment on a semi-truck or other large commercial vehicle. When they fail, vehicles can be extremely difficult to control and may even jackknife or roll over. As a result, tire blowouts or failure can easily result in injury-causing accidents, potentially leaving victims with significant medical expenses and health problems. Fortunately, people injured in accidents caused by semi-truck tire failure may be able to recover by filing a personal injury claim against the party or parties responsible.

Many of us have seen what looks like a stretched out piece of tire on the highway or on the side of the road. This is usually the result of tire tread separating from the body of a retreaded tire. Retreading is a common practice in the trucking industry, and involves taking old tires and applying new tread to the tire’s casings. Currently, the practice is fairly unregulated, other than tires requiring a “DOTR number” that indicates who and when the tire was retreaded and a general prohibition of using retread tires on the front wheels of buses.

When tires on semi-trucks fail, serious accidents can occur. Some of the more common types of accidents that result from tire blowouts include:

  • Roll overs
  • Jackknife accidents
  • Read end accidents
  • Sideswipe accidents
