Driver Charged in Cobb County DUI Accident

A driver has been charged with DUI and vehicular homicide for the single-car accident that left one person dead and three injured.

The fatal Cobb County accident occurred just after 2 a.m. on Friday, February 18 on the ramp from I-575 southbound to Chastain Road.  Twenty-one-year-old Herve Hanyurwimfura of Roswell was driving a Honda Accord with three passengers.  He drove through the "gore" area of the ramp, across the ramp's travel lane, and down an embankment into a stand of trees.

One passenger, 19-year-old Lawrence Ogunnowo of Lawrenceville, died at the scene.  Two other passengers, Franklyn Isibor, 22, of Roswell, Georgia, and Thierry Damon Hart, 21, of Wilmington, North Carolina, were injured and taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Hanyurwimfura was also injured and taken to the hospital.

None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to be contributing factors in the Georgia DUI crash.  Hanyurwimfura has been charged with DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, speeding, failure to maintain lane, driving through a gore, no tags, and no seat belt, and will be taken to the Cobb County jail once he leaves the hospital.
