Man Dies in Gwinnett County Semitruck Accident

A man is dead after an underride collision with a semi-truck in Gwinnett County.

The accident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, November 23rd on University Parkway at Hurricane Trail in Dacula.

Fifty-two-year-old Mark Johnson of Roswell was driving his BMW X3 west on University Parkway when a tractor-trailer heading east turned left in front of him.  Johnson was unable to stop in time.  His vehicle hit the trailer and kept going underneath it.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene of the Dacula accident.

The driver of the big rig, 42-year-old Freddie Taylor of Mount Vernon, Georgia, was arrested.  He was charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle and failure to yield. While the accident is still under investigation, drugs and alcohol are not thought to be contributing factors.

Underride accidents – accidents that occur when a car goes underneath a larger vehicle such as a semi-truck – are among the most deadly of Georgia motor vehicle crashes.  In addition to fatalities, these types of accidents also cause serious head injuries.
